American Clown Car
The logical consequence of a pointless universe is ugliness and destruction. No matter how you try to hide such a philosophy under a mantle of stoic nobility, it remains no fountain of hope, but rather a poison brew of pessimism. In language of its nihilist proponents, a pointless universe has no conceivable outcome except the grim maximization of entropy. Such a view cannot, via any tinkering or contortion, be made life-enhancing. Moreover, as philosopher Seyyed Hossein Nasr has observed, as values lose their grounding, the danger to the natural world increases, as does the likelihood of human atrocities. And that is lamentably evident today.

A pointless universe will no more lead to ugliness and destruction than it will to beauty and creativity. A pointless universe will simply go on unconcerned that some see ugliness and some beauty.
ReplyDeletewell this quote is not about human perception, not about whether people see ugliness or beauty, but about the truth. Pointless or not? Is it or isn't it? The Universe is moving toward complexity. It evolves. This a truth based on observation of the earliest light visible. Why does it evolve? evolution implies a goal. A goal is not pointless. So where is all this complexity taking us and why? The author is an astrophysical scientist who believes deeply in a living god that evolves. so do I.
